A Place at the Table

The Weight No One Talks About: Mental Health and the LGBTQ+ Experience

6/8/2026

Pride Month is full of color, music, and celebration — and that joy is real and worth honoring. But for many LGBTQ+ individuals, June also brings something quieter: a moment to exhale, to feel seen, and sometimes, to reckon with just how much energy it takes to move through a world that wasn't always built with you in mind.

At Harper Therapy Group, we believe mental health care has to start with honesty. And the honest truth is that LGBTQ+ individuals face mental health challenges at significantly higher rates than the general population — not because of who they are, but because of what they've often had to endure.

What the research tells us
LGBTQ+ people are more than twice as likely to experience depression and anxiety. LGBTQ+ youth are four times more likely to seriously consider suicide than their straight, cisgender peers. Transgender individuals, and especially trans people of color, face even steeper disparities in both mental health outcomes and access to affirming care.

These aren't just statistics. They are the real weight carried by real people; in classrooms, workplaces, families, and sometimes even in therapy offices where they've had to educate their own providers.

Where that weight comes from
Mental health researchers use the term minority stress to describe the chronic, cumulative stress that comes from navigating stigma, discrimination, and the labor of concealment or coming out, over and over again, across every new relationship and setting. That stress is compounding. It shows up in the body, in sleep, in relationships, in self-worth.

For many LGBTQ+ people, the pain isn't abstract. It might look like:
  • Growing up in a home or faith community where your identity was treated as a problem to be fixed
  • Losing friendships or family relationships after coming out
  • Facing discrimination at work, in housing, or in healthcare
  • Being misgendered, deadnamed, or rendered invisible in systems meant to help you
  • Navigating a world that celebrates Pride in June and legislates against you in January

What healing can look like
The good news is that affirming, culturally responsive care makes a measurable difference. LGBTQ+ individuals who have access to supportive relationships, affirming providers, and community connection show dramatically better mental health outcomes. Belonging is not a luxury. It is medicine.

Healing looks different for everyone. For some, it's individual therapy with a provider who doesn't require you to explain your identity before getting to the actual work. For others, it's group support, peer community, or simply finding language for experiences that have gone unnamed for years.

You don't have to carry it alone
If you're an LGBTQ+ individual who has been thinking about reaching out for support — this is your sign. You deserve a space where you are not tolerated but genuinely welcomed. Where your whole self is the starting point, not something to navigate around.

And if you're a family member, partner, or friend of someone in the LGBTQ+ community: your support matters more than you might know. Learning, listening, and showing up consistently can be lifesaving.

Harper Therapy Group is committed to providing affirming and inclusive care for every identity, every background, every story.
