A Place at the Table

Chosen Family: Why the People We Choose Matter

7/1/2026

There's a particular kind of love that doesn't come with a birth certificate or a family tree. It's built slowly, intentionally — through shared meals, late-night phone calls, and the quiet act of showing up for someone who needed to be seen. For many LGBTQ+ people, this is chosen family. And it is just as real, just as sustaining, and just as sacred as any other.

At Harper Therapy Group, we believe that the relationships you build — not just the ones you're born into — are central to who you are and how you heal.

What chosen family means
Chosen family refers to the people outside of biological or legal family structures who provide love, support, belonging, and care. For LGBTQ+ individuals, chosen family has historically been a lifeline — particularly for those who have experienced rejection, estrangement, or conditional acceptance from their families of origin.

But chosen family isn't only a response to loss. It's also an affirmative act — a way of building community rooted in mutual care, shared identity, and genuine acceptance. Many LGBTQ+ people describe their chosen families as the first place they ever felt fully themselves.

Why it matters for mental health
Research consistently shows that social connection is one of the strongest protective factors for mental health. For LGBTQ+ individuals specifically, having even one affirming, supportive relationship significantly reduces rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidality.

Chosen family provides what every person needs: a place to be known, to be held accountable with kindness, and to belong without having to earn it. When biological family relationships are strained or absent, chosen family doesn't fill a gap — it builds something new.

The grief that can live alongside it
It would be incomplete to talk about chosen family without acknowledging what sometimes precedes it. For many LGBTQ+ people, building a chosen family came after — or alongside — the pain of family rejection or disconnection. Both things can be true: chosen family can be a profound source of joy and still carry the shadow of what was lost or never offered.

If you're carrying that grief, it deserves space too. Healing doesn't require you to resolve it or move past it — just to acknowledge that it's there.

Honoring your people this Pride Month
Pride was built by chosen families — by communities of people who showed up for each other when institutions and biological families wouldn't. That legacy lives in every support group, every affirming friendship, every found community that said you belong here.

This month, we invite you to think about who your people are. Who shows up for you? Who do you show up for? Those relationships are worth naming, worth celebrating, and worth protecting.

If you're still looking for your people — that's okay too. Community exists, and it's findable. Sometimes it starts with one connection, one group, one space that feels a little safer than the last.
