The internship program at our practice is directed by Heather Harper, LCSW, and Daniel Pereira, MSW, who have developed a comprehensive in-house training experience designed to bridge classroom learning with real-world clinical practice.
Our team has created a supportive, engaging, and enriching internship program for MSW-level students that emphasizes professional growth, clinical competency, and social work values. Through a structured curriculum, interns participate in weekly didactic trainings that deepen their understanding of clinical interventions, ethics, diagnosis, professional identity, and emerging topics relevant to the field.
Interns participate in a cohort-based model, with one designated day each week when all interns are in the office together. This collaborative learning environment fosters peer support, professional connection, and opportunities to develop as clinicians within a group practice setting.
The program is intentionally designed to provide a well-rounded social work experience. Interns gain exposure to direct clinical work with clients, observation of experienced clinicians, facilitation of therapeutic groups, community outreach initiatives, and developing an understanding of the impact of social justice issues on the communities we serve. In addition, interns learn the practical aspects of functioning within a private group practice, including interdisciplinary collaboration, professional communication, and ethical decision-making in a real-world setting.
To further enhance learning, interns have the opportunity to attend optional twice-monthly weekend trainings focused on advanced clinical interventions, diagnosis, treatment planning, and specialized areas of practice.
We believe that private practice can and should reflect the full breadth of social work. Our internship program intentionally incorporates micro, mezzo, and macro learning experiences to ensure interns develop into thoughtful, competent, and socially conscious professionals.
We currently partner with universities including Virginia Commonwealth University, Bryn Mawr College, and Louisiana State University, and we look forward to expanding our partnerships as our program continues to grow.
