Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
(EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapeutic approach designed to help individuals process and heal from distressing memories, traumatic experiences, and the emotional symptoms that follow. EMDR uses guided bilateral stimulation (such as side-to-side eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones) to help the brain reprocess stuck or unresolved experiences, reducing their emotional impact.

EMDR is recognized by the American Psychological Association (APA), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Veterans Administration as an effective treatment for trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and related conditions.

Who Provides EMDR at Our Practice?
EMDR is offered exclusively by Heather Harper, LCSW, who is EMDR-certified and trained in this specialized modality. Heather integrates EMDR into individual therapy sessions for clients who would benefit from this targeted approach to healing.

Is EMDR Part of Standard Therapy Sessions?
EMDR is available as a specialized add-on service to standard individual therapy. Because EMDR requires additional training, specialized oversight, and often longer session times, it is offered with an add-on fee.

Add-On Fee: $15 per session
This fee supports the specialized training, certification, and care required for EMDR treatment. Sessions typically run 60–90 minutes depending on client needs.
If you're curious whether EMDR is right for you, we offer a complimentary consultation to discuss your goals and determine if this modality aligns with your healing journey.

Who Might Benefit from EMDR?
EMDR can be especially helpful for individuals experiencing:
  • Traumatic or distressing memories that feel "stuck"
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Anxiety, panic attacks, or phobias
  • Grief or loss that feels overwhelming
  • Childhood adverse experiences or emotional distress
  • Performance anxiety or confidence challenges
  • Sensory or body-based triggers from past experiences

EMDR is not limited to those with major trauma—many people benefit from EMDR for smaller but impactful experiences that continue to affect their present-day well-being.

What to Expect During an EMDR Session
  1. Initial Assessment: A thorough evaluation to understand your history, current symptoms, and readiness for EMDR.
  2. Preparation: You'll learn grounding techniques and coping strategies to ensure you feel safe and supported throughout the process.
  3. Processing: Using guided bilateral stimulation, you'll briefly focus on a distressing memory while allowing your brain to reprocess it.
  4. Integration: New, healthier associations are formed, reducing the emotional charge of the original experience.
  5. Closure: Each session ends with grounding and reflection to ensure you feel stable before leaving.

EMDR is a collaborative process. You'll always have control over the pace and depth of work, and ongoing check ins regularly occur to ensure you're comfortable.

Is EMDR Safe?
Yes. EMDR is a safe, well-researched treatment when provided by a trained and certified clinician. Heather Harper ensures that all clients are properly prepared for EMDR and have grounding tools in place before beginning processing work.

Next Steps
If you're interested in exploring EMDR as part of your therapy journey:
  1. Schedule a consultation with Heather Harper to discuss your goals and EMDR readiness
  2. Begin standard individual therapy if you're not already in therapy
  3. Add EMDR to your sessions once  it's appropriate

Your path to healing begins with understanding what works best for you. EMDR can be a powerful tool for those ready to process and release the emotional weight of past experiences.
