Couples Therapy

Couples Therapy
Why Couples Therapy Matters

Relationships are one of the most meaningful parts of our lives, yet they can also become one of our greatest sources of stress and pain. Couples therapy provides a safe, supportive space to address challenges, strengthen your connection, and build healthier patterns of communication, intimacy, and trust.

Whether you're navigating ongoing conflict, feeling emotionally disconnected, recovering from betrayal, adjusting to a major life transition, or simply wanting to deepen your relationship, couples therapy can help you and your partner build a stronger foundation together.

Choosing to invest in your relationship is an investment in your future. Many couples discover that therapy not only helps resolve current challenges but also equips them with lifelong tools to create a more resilient, connected, and fulfilling partnership.

Who Provides Couples Therapy at Harper Therapy Group?
Couples Therapy is offered exclusively by Heather Harper, LCSW and Daniel Pereira, MSW both clinicians with advanced training in evidence-based couples interventions.

Daniel Pereira, MSW specializes in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), helping couples strengthen emotional bonds, improve communication, and repair relationship distress through an attachment-based approach.

Heather Harper, LCSW integrates Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) with Relational Life Therapy (RLT) and is currently completing the certification process in RLT. This allows her to combine the emotional safety and attachment focus of EFT with the direct, practical, and accountability-based interventions of RLT to help couples create meaningful, lasting change.

Whether you are experiencing ongoing conflict, recovering from infidelity, struggling with communication, or simply wanting to strengthen an already healthy relationship, we'll help match you with the clinician and therapeutic approach that best fits your goals.

Our Couples Therapy Approaches
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)Both Heather and Daniel utilize Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, one of the most researched and effective approaches to couples therapy.

EFT is grounded in the understanding that we are wired for connection. Relationship distress often develops when couples become caught in painful cycles of conflict, withdrawal, criticism, or emotional distance. Rather than focusing on blame, EFT helps couples understand the emotions and attachment needs driving these patterns so they can reconnect in healthier ways.

EFT helps couples:
  • Identify and express underlying emotions and attachment needs
  • Break repetitive cycles of conflict and withdrawal
  • Rebuild trust, emotional safety, and connection
  • Strengthen communication and emotional responsiveness
  • Create a more secure and lasting bond

EFT has been shown to be highly effective for communication difficulties, chronic conflict, life transitions, trauma, grief, intimacy concerns, and recovery after infidelity. Research demonstrates that approximately 70–75% of couples move from relationship distress to recovery, while nearly 90% experience significant improvements in their relationship satisfaction.

Relational Life Therapy (RLT)Heather is currently completing the certification process in Relational Life Therapy (RLT), an innovative couples therapy model developed by relationship expert Terry Real.

While EFT focuses on strengthening emotional connection and secure attachment, RLT helps couples understand and change the unhealthy relationship patterns that keep them stuck. It emphasizes balancing vulnerability with accountability, empowering both partners to take responsibility for the dynamics they contribute to the relationship.

Rather than simply understanding why conflict occurs, RLT provides practical tools that help couples create meaningful change both inside and outside of therapy.

RLT helps couples:
  • Move beyond blame, defensiveness, and resentment
  • Develop healthy accountability without shame
  • Replace power struggles with collaboration
  • Communicate honestly, directly, and respectfully
  • Build relationships rooted in mutual respect, authenticity, and emotional intimacy
  • Create lasting behavioral change that supports long-term relationship health

Many couples appreciate RLT because it combines warmth and compassion with direct feedback and practical skill-building. Couples often leave sessions with concrete tools they can begin using immediately in their everyday relationship.

Heather frequently integrates the emotional depth of EFT with the practical interventions of RLT, allowing couples to both heal emotionally and build healthier relationship habits that last.

What to Expect During Couples Therapy

Personalized Assessment
Your therapist will meet with both partners to understand your relationship history, strengths, current concerns, and goals. Together, you'll determine whether an EFT approach or an integrated EFT/RLT approach is the best fit for your relationship.

Understanding Your Relationship Pattern
Together, you'll identify the negative interaction cycles that keep you feeling stuck—such as pursuing and withdrawing, criticizing and defending, or repeating the same unresolved arguments.

Deepening Understanding
Your therapist will help each partner identify the emotions, attachment needs, and beliefs that influence how you respond to one another during moments of conflict and disconnection.

Creating New Experiences
Through guided conversations and practical interventions, you'll begin practicing healthier ways of communicating, repairing conflict, expressing vulnerability, and responding to one another with greater empathy and understanding.

Building Lasting Change
As therapy progresses, you'll strengthen new relationship patterns, develop practical skills for navigating future challenges, and build a relationship grounded in trust, emotional safety, and mutual respect.

Couples therapy is collaborative, respectful, and nonjudgmental. Both partners' experiences are valued, and the focus is on understanding—not assigning blame. Your therapist serves as a guide, helping you work together toward meaningful and lasting change.

Is Couples Therapy Safe?
Yes. Couples therapy is a safe and confidential process when provided by trained clinicians.

Heather Harper and Daniel Pereira create an environment where both partners can speak openly and honestly without fear of judgment. They maintain neutrality throughout the therapeutic process and focus on helping couples better understand one another rather than taking sides.
Every relationship is unique, and therapy is tailored to meet your specific needs, goals, and circumstances.

Who Can Benefit from Couples Therapy?

Couples therapy can be helpful if you and your partner are experiencing:
  • Frequent conflict or arguments that never seem to resolve
  • Feeling emotionally disconnected or distant
  • Communication challenges or feeling misunderstood
  • Trust issues, including healing after infidelity or betrayal
  • Grief, trauma, or significant life transitions affecting your relationship
  • Sexual concerns or differences in intimacy needs
  • Parenting stress or blended family challenges
  • Premarital counseling and relationship preparation
  • A desire to strengthen an already healthy relationship
Couples therapy isn't only for relationships in crisis. Many couples seek therapy proactively to deepen their connection, improve communication, prepare for marriage or parenthood, or simply continue growing together.

Next StepsIf you're interested in beginning couples therapy:
  • Schedule a consultation with Heather Harper or Daniel Pereira to discuss your relationship goals.
  • Both partners will attend the initial session together.
  • Your therapist will recommend a treatment approach and schedule that best supports your relationship.
  • Together, you'll begin building the skills, insight, and connection needed for a healthier, more fulfilling partnership.

Your relationship is one of the most important investments you'll ever make. Whether you're looking to reconnect, heal, or grow together, we're here to help you build a stronger, more secure relationship for years to come.
